Aishwarya Rai Bachchan Delivers Daughter

Bollywood actress and former Miss World Aishwarya Rai Bachchan delivered a baby girl on Wednesday morning (November 16, 2011) at the Seven Hills hospital in Andheri, a suburb in Mumbai, India.

Aishwarya, who is married to actor Abhishek Bachchan, a member of Bollywood’s first family, is reported to have gone into labour at about 4 am local time and the baby was born about six hours later.

The delivery was reported to have been normal, according to hospital sources who reported that mother and child were hale and hearty.

Aishwarya’s father-in-law, Indian screen legend, Amitabh Bachchan announced the news on Twitter: “I AM DADA to the cutest baby girl !!” Abhishek’s tweet read, “IT’S A GIRL!!!!!! ))))”

Ash, as Aishwarya is popularly known, was escorted to hospital by an entourage that included her parents Vrinda and Krishnaraj Rai, brother Aditya, husband Abhishek, father-in-law Amitabh, mother-in-law Jaya and sister-in-law Shweta Nanda (Abhishek’s sister).

It was Amitabh Bachchan himself who broke the news of Ash’s pregnancy on Twitter, in June. Big B, as Amitabh is popularly referred to, received more than 2,000 tweets in congratulations, and the Bachchan residence in Juhu, Mumbai, was a scene of celebration with guests thronging to it throughout the day.

The gender of the imminent birth was a matter of speculation among people who had placed millions of dollars worth of bets on it, in the unofficial betting market, in India.

The Bachchans are said to have chosen a suburban hospital, to keep media coverage of the event at a minimum. Ash and Abhishek began to date when they co-starred in the Bollywood movie Guru and their marriage in 2007 that got high profile coverage in the Indian media was a private ceremony to which the Bachchans invited only their family’s  closest friends and associates.

Amitabh and Jaya Bachchan have two other grandchildren, Navya Naveli and Agastya, who are Shweta Nanda’s daughter and son, respectively.
