Muammar Gaddafi Is Dead
Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi was killed on Thursday, October 20, 2011, in his hometown of Sirte on the Libyan coast.
The Libyan strongman’s death came during a battle between his loyalist forces and rebels who captured the dictator alive after they found him hiding inside a sewerage drain. Gaddafi was said to have been found injured at the time of his captured and succumbed after sustaining a fatal gunshot to his head owing to “crossfire” during his transport, in a truck, to Misrata.
There was much speculation as to the cause of Gaddafi’s death, as some wounds were said to have been inflicted after his capture and the doctor who inspected the dictator’s body found gun shots to the head and the abdomen.
Gaddafi was believed to have fled his vehicle to the safety of a drainage ditch, after a NATO airstrike on his Sirte stronghold. The vehicles were fleeing the Sirte assault when they were attacked by two fighter jets.
Senior National Transitional Council commanders claimed that the Libyan dictator had succumbed to wounds sustained during the final assault.
NTC vice-chairman Abdul Hafiz Ghoga addressing a news conference said, “We announce to the world that Muammar Gaddafi has been killed at the hands of the revolutionaries. We will announce the liberation of Libya within hours, maybe sooner.”
